About SPARRSO
According to Wikipedia, The Bangladesh Space Research and Remote Sensing Organization (Bengali: বাংলাদেশ মহাকাশ গবেষণা ও দূর অনুধাবন কেন্দ্র Bangladesh môhakash gôbeshôna o dur ônudhabôn kendrô), or SPARRSO, is a state agency concerned with astronomical research and the application of space technology in Bangladesh. SPARRSO works closely with JAXA, NASA and the ESA in environmental and meteorological research. Using Japanese and American satellites, SPARRSO monitors agro-climatic conditions and water resources in Bangladesh.
Space technology applications in Bangladesh started in 1968 through the establishment of APT Ground Station in the then Atomic Energy Center. In 1972 National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) of the United States launched Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS). Likewise in newly independent Bangladesh Bangabandhu Government initiated a project named Bangladesh ERTS Programme for surveying natural resources, environment, and disaster monitoring and management purposes. Due to the success of the activities issued under this program, in 1975 Bangladesh Landsat Programme(BLP) was included in the five-year plan. Afterward, in 1980, Space and Atmospheric Research Centre (SARC) of Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission and BLP was merged to establish Bangladesh Space Research and Remote Sensing Organization (SPARRSO). For the effective use of space and remote sensing technology and research and development in this field, the parliament of the Peoples’ Republic of Bangladesh re-organized the Bangladesh Space Research and Remote Sensing Organization (SPARRSO) by the enactment of Act.29 1991.
